A Message From The President
New buildings and programs mark years
of growth at Piedmont College
The past five years mark one of the most intense periods of growth at
Piedmont College in its 103-year history. During this time, the college
opened five major new buildings and added new degree programs to its
undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
With the dedication of Stewart Hall on Oct. 20, 2000, the teaching of
math and science at Piedmont entered a new era. The three-story science
center more than quadruples the previous laboratory space and represents a
quantum leap in safety, convenience and opportunity for students and
faculty.
Named for the late H. Milton Stewart Sr. and Helen Stroud Stewart of
Cornelia, former owners of Standard Telephone Company, construction of
Stewart Hall was made possible by a lead gift from the Stewart's daughter,
Piedmont Trustee Kay Stewart Swanson, and her family.
Also new on campus is the Johnny Mize Athletic Center, which opened in
November 2000. This modern, 51,000-square-foot facility houses a
multi-purpose gymnasium, fitness center, classrooms, and training rooms.
The center is named for National Baseball Hall of Fame member Johnny Mize,
a Demorest native who played for Piedmont's varsity team while attending
high school at the former Piedmont Academy. The Mize Center also houses
the Johnny Mize Baseball Museum, a collection of Mize's own memorabilia
from his days in the major leagues from 1936 to 1953.
New academic programs include undergraduate degrees in mass
communications, environmental science, and interdisciplinary studies. In
2001, Piedmont graduated its first nursing students from the new Daniel
School of Nursing and Health Sciences.
In 1995, Piedmont offered its first graduate program, a master of arts
in teaching, and enrolled 15 graduate students. Since then the graduate
program has grown to include more than 700 students in early childhood
education, secondary education, public administration, special education
-- and new this year, art and music education.
The college will add two new graduate-level programs in 2001. These
include a master of business administration program and an education
specialists degree program.
At Piedmont, we commit ourselves to your intellectual growth and your
social development. It is our goal that you graduate from Piedmont College
with the knowledge and the skills that make for a successful and happy
life.
I welcome you to our college.
